National Child Safety Training Case Study

When national child safety training became mandatory for everyone working or volunteering in early childhood education and care (ECEC), the deadline wasn’t optional, and neither was getting it right.

By 27 August 2026, everyone working or volunteering in an ECEC service needed to complete the Foundation module of national child safety training through Geccko, the government’s dedicated online learning platform. For a single service, that’s a scheduling and follow-up exercise. Across a portfolio of services spanning multiple states, rosters and team structures, it’s a genuine compliance project.

Astute Early Years Specialists partnered with a portfolio of early learning services across Australia to make sure every one of them got there.

The Challenge

Here’s what made it hard for the service leadership teams:

Individual tracking. Shared logins aren’t permitted, so every staff member needs their own account and their own completion record.
Enrolment follow-up. Chasing enrolments without adding to already stretched educator workloads.
Accurate reporting. Reporting progress accurately to meet regulatory obligations.
Business as usual. Doing all of this on top of running a service every day.

The Approach

Astute worked directly with each service’s leadership team to onboard staff onto Geccko, set up tracking against their existing HR systems, and run structured completion pushes in the lead-up to the deadline. The result was a compliance obligation turned into a manageable, well-communicated process rather than a last-minute scramble.

The Results

Foundation training: 100% complete, on time

Over 350 educators and team members, across a selection of clients who partnered with us directly, completed the mandatory Foundation module of national child safety training ahead of the national deadline. A clean sweep, with zero non-compliance risk anywhere across this group.

Advanced training: well ahead of the curve, mid-rollout

With the Advanced module still progressively rolling out, 138 people have completed it so far out of 401 currently enrolled across this selection of clients. That’s an average of 34% complete, with individual services already reaching completion rates of up to 66%. That spread is exactly what you’d expect partway through a staged rollout, and Astute’s onboarding support continues across this group to keep both numbers climbing.

The deadline for existing staff in relevant roles to complete the Advanced training applicable to their role is 31 March 2027. For anyone starting in a relevant role after 30 September 2026, Advanced training must be completed within three months of commencement.
