Educators & Teachers

Professional learning that will improve your practice.

If you have a passion for teaching young children, it’s a well-known fact, that you are a special person with special qualities.

Teaching is a craft developed over many years:
  • while you are on the job, and
  • via continuous professional learning and development
  • all the while practicing critical reflection and holding professional conversations with peers and colleagues.

Astute Early Years Specialists love the craft of teaching and learning.  We are career professionals, in fact it’s a vocation for us (kind of like a working holiday) and we want to share with you how to keep your passion alive and thrive in this physically and emotionally demanding career you have chosen.

Our professional learning and development will focus on the three core areas of:
  • Teaching and learning
  • Practice, and
  • Leadership

Within each core area, every topic will map back to:
  1. Early Years Learning Framework outcomes
  2. Australian Professional Standards for Teachers
  3. National Quality Areas and Standards

Teaching and learning

“How do we teach phonetic awareness to children before school?   Do we even have to?  I thought we had a play based learning program?”

Do these questions sound familiar?  When we refer to teaching and learning, we are explicitly referring to learning experiences for children.

What children learn, how they learn and when they learn is all critical in laying foundations for lifelong learning and preparations for moving to big school.

We will work with you to help you to understand the relevance between the Early Years Learning Framework and the Australian Curriculum.   It’s important to make strong connections from these frameworks to your teaching with young children, within a play based approach.

Do you know the difference between reflecting on the program and children’s learning and reflecting on your practice?  Does intentional teaching with a play based approach confuse you? Often these questions go unasked because it’s assumed you already know the answers.

When we refer to practice we are referring to your craft, what you do as teachers and educators to bring your learning environment to life.  Our professional learning and development for Practice will focus on the 5 W’s. That’s all about the what, when, how, why, and who of what you do.

We have worked for many people over the years and in many settings.  There is always that one person that stays in our minds as being a life changing, inspirational leader.

Sadly, there is also that one leader that can be uninspiring (at best) and damaging (at worst).

Our leadership programs are designed on real world early childhood settings, current research and our own understanding of the varied early childhood contexts in Australia.

Our programs will make sure you don’t settle for an uninspiring and thoughtless approach, and will launch you into inspiring and dynamic practice.

Every. Single. Day.

Blending the real world requirements of management with the aspirations and intent of strong leadership, we will work with you to:

  • Streamline your day to day organisational and management tasks,
  • Empower and lead teams and connect with others, and
  • Grow and develop as an individual.

It doesn’t matter what position you hold, what matters is how you hold that position.  That’s true leadership.

Astute, and Mel in particular, really helped me to get my head around my position as Educational Leader at my centre.  I had been in the role for a couple of years with no real direction or clear idea of what my job involved.  Mel worked with me and gave me clear guidelines and processes to put into place to effectively fulfil my role.  I am now an important part of our leadership team and am enjoying empowering the other teachers to consistently reflect on and improve their practice.

Gena Smith Teacher and Educational Leader at Next Steps Kindy

“Astute,” which derives from the Latin noun astus, meaning “craft, suggests cleverness, mental sharpness, and diplomatic skill”

Every child you teach will teach you something new about yourself and your teaching style.

Teaching is not a skill one collects when you graduate and pick up your qualification; it’s so much more than formal qualifications.

It doesn’t matter what position you hold, what matters is how you hold that position.  That’s true leadership.
